Daya Gamage – US National Correspondent Asian Tribune
Las Vegas, Nevada. 11 April (Asiantribune.com): The Asian community in the State of Nevada in general and the growing number of Sri Lankans living in the US capital of the hospitality industry Las Vegas in Nevada in particular were delighted when youthful Daraka Sanjeewa Sedera launched his political campaign in early April to enter the Nevada State Legislature whose election is schedule for November this year.
The larger picture is even more striking: In the history of the democratic process, Sanje Sedera became the first ever Sri Lankan to enter into a race for high political office in the United States. And, he is the first South Asian to contest for a major political office in the State of Nevada.
The enthusiasm of many shades of personalities were amply manifested when they joined in the early April well attended gathering in Las Vegas to launch Sanje Sedera’s political campaign.
The leader of the federation of Asian associations in Southern Nevada Shri Mike Vaswani president of the Asian-American Group, an influential political action movement which embedded its footprints in many state-wide elections including the Governor’s, incumbent judicial officer Judge Cheryl Moss, executive members from the State of Nevada Democratic Party under which Sedera is contesting the state legislature election, key officials of the Lions Club International who constantly work at grass-roots level, Palitha Pelpola, Executive Director of the Los Angeles-based Sri Lanka Foundation which maintains an impressive network among Sri Lankan expatriates in majority of states in the nation and senior Sri Lankan academic in the University of Nevada in Las Vegas Professor Karunaratne Hanagawatte graced the occasion to give fillip to Sanje Sedera’s maiden political endeavor.
Youthful Daraka Sanjeewa Sedera launched his political campaign in early April to enter the Nevada State Legislature whose election is schedule for November this year.
Popularly elected governor as the chief executive of the State of Nevada, one of the fifty states in the U.S., the House of Representatives and the Senate, both elected by popular franchise, perform the duties as the supreme legislature enacting laws and preparing the annual budget for the state. The State Legislature, both the House and Senate, controls the larger affairs of the State of Nevada and helps the Governor to discharge his executive duties.
Sanje Sedera, who owns a successful real estate and mortgage lending enterprise, is running for Nevada Assembly District 2 as a Democratic Party candidate in the November 2008 state-wide general election.
Sedera proved his organizing prowess, ability to harness different talents of diverse individuals and leadership qualities when he mobilized a group of Nevadans in the aftermath of the 2004 December 26 deadly Tsunami that hit the maritime provinces of Sri Lanka destroying lives and livelihood of mainly those who were in the lower economic bracket.
This 34-year-old mortgage broker teamed up with his temple’s Buddhist monk Venerable Alawala Subhuthi and the Sri Lankan Catholic Parish priest Most Reverend Bede Wewita along with other Sri Lankans and Americans to collect money, medicines, summer clothes and toiletries and send them to Sri Lanka by mid-January 2005.
Sedera’s efforts culminated in sending several consignments of essentials to the destitute Tsunami-affected families in the coastal belt in Sri Lanka to be distributed by nationally and internationally recognized service organizations.
One could easily draw a character analysis of Sanje Sedera taking his Tsunami mobilization endeavor: He has the inborn ability of visualizing priorities, in this case the immediate necessities of the devastated Tsunami families who were unable to rise without external assistance. Then he had the vision to make those priorities a reality in identifying diverse talents and expertise to mobilize an action plan in collecting those necessities. He had the humility to work closely with the volunteers, most of whom he helped identified, to implement ‘Project Tsunami’ to a success. The heart he opened to alleviate the suffering of the Tsunami-affected Sri Lankans will undoubtedly hold in good stead among those who have many needs and necessities in the Assembly District he envisages to represent in the Nevada State Assembly.
Addressing the gathering at the inauguration of his election campaign in early April Sanje Sedera said that his entering to politics would result in the contribution to a new direction in the political affairs of the State of Nevada. He highlighted the importance of the State’s Property tax reforms, the necessity of Gaming tax reforms, elevating the standard of education establishing accountable schools, expansion of the Summerlin Parkway and a business roundtable for Assembly 2. Confident that this years’ November presidential election will send a Democrat to the White House and the political atmosphere greatly in favor of the Democratic Party to win majorities in both the House and the Senate in the Nevada State legislature, Sedera said his election as a Democrat to Assembly District 2 will be a great help for the constituents.
Sanje Sedera arrived in the United States sixteen years ago to be a student of the Idaho University. He has been in Las Vegas over a decade and has been successful entrepreneur in the real estate and mortgage lending field. He has given much of his time, energy and wealth to several social services activities in Las Vegas.
He has worked with many local charities and groups such as the Lions Club, Asian Chamber of Commerce, homeless care and advocacy, Shade Tree, the Salvation Army and literacy exchanges where used books are donated by US students to help those needy students overseas.
He is the son of Nimal and Swarna Sedera both who made a remarkable imprint in the insurance field in Sri Lanka. Nimal is an accomplished author of dozen or more books, a well known leader in public affairs and a prominent member of the hierarchy of the Lions International in Sri Lanka. Swarna is a retired academic.
